NVG optics, live weather cells, three new theatres and the countermeasure rework, itemised. Everything that changed and why, straight from the patch team.
Season 4 is the largest content drop since launch. It adds a night fighting layer on top of every existing system, a weather engine that behaves like a player, and three theatres built specifically to exploit both. Here is the complete list, including the balance changes we argued about until the last week.
NVG is now an equippable optic layer on every airframe. Green phosphor and white phosphor modes are both in, with realistic gain, bloom around light sources, and noise in pure darkness. Flying through a lit city on NVG is deliberately blinding.
Searchlights became a mechanic: enemy emplacements actively hunt with light cones. Being caught in one raises enemy lock speed dramatically. The counterplay is NVG discipline, terrain masking, or shooting the light, which is legal and deeply satisfying.
Sandstorm, monsoon and ion storm cells now move across theatres as physical volumes rather than scripted zones. They drift with wind direction, so the same mission can be clear on approach and swallowed on exfil.
Each cell type carries gameplay modifiers. Sand drops laser range and clogs intakes. Monsoon kills concealment but cleans missile plume tracking. Ion storm corrupts radar and lock tones at random intervals. Details are in the hazard protocol section of the index.
We didn't add weather as decoration. We added it as an opponent.
The flare/chaff/jammer bay got rebalanced. Flares now have a burst window of 1.8 seconds against IR seekers, down from 2.4. Chaff coverage dropped to 180 degrees but reloads faster. The jammer drains more auxiliary power but works on two seeker generations instead of one.
Net effect: countermeasures require timing again. The old meta of holding the button through the whole mission is dead, which was the point.
Blackout Ridge brings night searchlight hunts. Monsoon Veil drops a live storm over a river delta. Carrier Group moves the fight to open ocean with a moving rearm deck. All three unlock through the existing campaign path rather than a separate purchase.
The Night Ops Mission Pack adds six more sorties on top for pilots who want the extended arc. The base game additions are free for every account.
The optic itself is free on every airframe after the update. Battery management during use is the real cost: extended NVG drains the auxiliary bus.
Yes. Squadron ops and brackets get the same live cells, which is why event marshals now publish the weather forecast with the match card.
In custom private ops, yes, the ruleset toggle exists. In campaign and ranked play, no. Weather is part of the theatre's identity.
